Hacking The iPhone?

There is still a lot hype surrounding Apple's new iPhone, and many people are wondering if there is (or will be) a hack. People are excited about the potential of being able to use their iPhones on other networks (other than AT&T).

Unlocking the iPhone will enable it to be used with any cellular provider with a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) network, and not only just AT&T's network.

Well, sadly, hacking or unlocking the iPhone won't that simple, and doesn't consist of simply typing in a secret password and accessing its magical internal operating system. It's not going to be that easy.

There are some rumors that the activation can be bypassed or cracked using the Apple iTunes application, or through the Jailbreak or iPhoneinterface.

It's also been heard that security experts have figured out how to tap into the code to grab people’s text messages, call log, address book, and voicemail data, as well as being able to swipe passwords.

Just like any other locked phone, PDA, MP3 player, or other secured digital device, the iPhone is just another test of security and proprietary features. Certainly there will be firmware updates and other patches available for the iPhone, and ultimately the product will be hacked through one exploit or another, but to what extent, is unknown.

The value of unlocking the iPhone is obvious to those who won't or don't want to do business with AT&T. Exclusive agreements rub people the wrong way, especially when they're limited in their choice of providers.
